OPERA GLASSES AND SPYGLASSES
jealousy glass
Europe: France
1750-1770
enamel; brass
overall: 63 x 35 mm

Jealousy glass. The barrel is of blue enamel featuring white decorative embellishments. Within the barrel is a large oval side-aperture opening onto an oval mirror with surrounding green cord. A hinged 'lens cover' at the end of the barrel conceals a storage compartment, probably for snuff or for a pomade. A scene depicting houses is painted on both sides of this cover. There is a brass eyepiece at the other end.
