20th century reproduction of a 15th c. painting, as printed on the British Optical Association's own press and supplied to members with copies of the Dioptric Review under the caption 'A reproduction of a photograph in the B.O.A. museum of a mural painting of the Day of Pentecost which, in the opinion of Professor Greeff of Berlin - an authority on the history of spectacles - contains the earliest pictorial representation of spectacles. (The figure wearing the spectacles is said to be Saint Luke). This painting is to be found behind the High Altar in the parish church of Niederwildungen in the princedom of Waldeck in Germany. It was painted in 1404 by Konrad von Soest'. Mounted with maroon card, housed in an early 21st century red wood and glazed frame with internal gilt surround.
