Pamphlet (reprint) of a journal article (personal copy of H.H. Emsley) concerning a form of focimeter and also outlining the history of the development of focimeters from Scharpf's Box of 1877. Printed in black and white on 23 pages with soft grey covers. Illustrated with line drawings and photographs including one of an early prototype, several modifications for specific uses, the Dioptrometer as currently marketed and a reproduction of an advertisement (post 1914) for the American Optical Company's Hardy Lensometer and Wellsworth Lensometer as modified by Edgar Tillyer, also the Allen Foci-Prismometer made by G.S. Johnson. Reprinted from the Journal of the Optical Society of America and Review of Scientific Instruments. Includes handwritten notes pasted inside front cover addressed to 'Skipper' from Fred W. Jobe, Head of the Ophthalmic Instrument Department at Bausch & Lomb, Rochester NY, USA, dated February 1960. Library stamp of B&L on front cover.
