Black and white photograph reproducing the frontispiece from an edition (1646) of Athanasius Kircher's 'Ars magna lucis et umbrae, in decem libros digesta. Quibus admirandae lucis et umbrae in mundo, atque adeo universa natura, vires effectusque', including an engraving by Peter Miotte of Burgundy of celestial/astrological figures, one holding a caduceus topped by an eye, another a rod topped by a perching owl and standing astride a double-headed peacock. Rays of sunlight reflect off mirrors including one set within a cave. In the top right corner another eye regards writing on a page. Includes also a dedicatory portrait in an oval of Archduke Ferdinand. From the copy in the rare books collection of the British Optical Association Museum and Library.
