Engraving of a sermon taking place at St Martin-in-the-Fields. Plate 2 of a series of engravings, 'Industry and Idleness', originally published in 1747. The bespectacled old woman on the left is the key-holder to the box pews so she faces away from the preacher ready to receive latecomers. Another bespectacled figure, possibly a minor clergyman, is facing away to the right, but maybe he hopes to see beyond the buxom lady’s fan? Set within a printed architectural border. In a 20th c. cardboard mount with wash and gilding, and a black wooden frame with gilded inner border, glazed.
