20th century reproduction of a 17th c. engraving after a painting, as printed on the British Optical Association's own press and supplied to members with copies of the Dioptric Review under the caption 'An engraving from a picture by Adrian van Ostade (1610-85), a pupil of Franz Hals. This impression of a Belgian pedlar of spectacles is typical of Ostade's love of representing unpretentious scenes, such as cottages, inns and fairs'. Mounted with maroon card, housed in an early 21st century red wood and glazed frame with internal gilt surround.
