20th century reproduction of a 19th c. satirical engraving, as printed on the British Optical Association's own press and supplied to members with copies of the Dioptric Review under the caption 'On the back of the original engraving, now in the British Optical Association Museum, are written the following words in German script: "Symbolic engraving testifying to the prosperity of the Netherlands" at that time. In the centre of the picture an important Dutchman stands beside his well-provided coffer. He is dividing his riches between Commerce, Diligence, etc., but refuses to give anything to the flattering strangers on his right. In the foreground are seen the British bull-dog, hte Dutch lion, and the French cock. In the extreme left-hand corner is a trunk full of spectacles on which is written "Economical Spectacles." There is no mention made of a date or title of the engraving.' Mounted, landscape format, with maroon card, housed in an early 21st century red wood and glazed frame with internal gilt surround.
