20th century reproduction of an 18th c. painting, as printed on the British Optical Association's own press and supplied to members with copies of the Dioptric Review under the caption 'An Early Eyeglass Style. A self-portrait by Dorothea Therbusch, nee Lisiewski, a painter of Polish origin (1721-82). The original hangs in the State Picture Gallery, Deutsches Museum, Berlin (with whose kind permission we now reproduce it). It is one of many self-portraits by the artist and is among her best work. The round glass attached to the cap is in imitation of a considerably earlier style, since lenses hooked on to headgear were worn in the 14th century.' Mounted with maroon card, housed in an early 21st century red wood and glazed frame with internal gilt surround.
